The Shasta River has long been recognized as a highly important tributary in the Klamath River basin for anadromous fish productions.

Local ranchers have partnered up with agencies and through grants have completed many projects that have been identified to minimize the polarization between agriculture and fishery needs.

Projects such as exclusion fencing along the riparian zones of the Shasta River, tailwater return systems, fish screening and the removal of flash dams to name a few of the cooperative efforts that have been made to improve the fishery.

An increased understanding of the watershed and how fish utilize the watershed has allowed for identification of recovery tasks that are critical to the conservation of anadromous fish populations and at the same time preserve agriculture and other wildlife that call the Shasta Valley home.
