The principle land use within the Shasta Valley Region is agriculture. This includes cattle ranching as well as farming for hay and other crops.
Lake Shastina impounded by Dwinnell Reservoir is located on the Shasta River at approx. River Mile (RM) 40. Dwinnell Reservoir was constructed in the 1920’s and provides water for irrigation, instream flow, recreation, wildlife habitat and water to the City of Montague.
The water supply for the Shasta Valley is derived from snowmelt runoff, springs and occasional summer thundershowers that enter the Shasta River via several tributaries.
The Shasta River drains about 800 square miles.
The Shasta River's headwaters include the north slopes of Mt. Shasta that rises to an elevation of 14,162 ft at the south end of the Shasta Valley and the Eddys at an altitude of about 6,000 feet.
The Shasta Valley is located in the central part of Siskiyou County, California. The Shasta River flows northerly to its confluence with the Klamath River north of the city of Yreka.
